While maintaining his presence in the advertising industry, Banerjee has made a significant mark as a feature filmmaker, captivating audiences with his unique storytelling and cinematic vision.

Dibakar Banerjee's offer audiences narratives that delve deep into unexplored territories. Rather than following traditional Bollywood tropes, Banerjee's storytelling often navigates through the complexities of societal issues, human psychology, and moral dilemmas.

As his latest directorial venture 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2' opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, we take a look at five of his directorial ventures that have been highly praised by audiences:

1. Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006): This comedy-drama film, Banerjee's directorial debut, received widespread acclaim for its fresh narrative and brilliant performances. The film revolves around a middle-class man's struggle against a land mafia to reclaim his property. 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, establishing Banerjee as a promising director.

 

2. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008): Banerjee continued his success streak with this crime comedy-drama that follows the life of a charming thief essayed by Abhay Deol. Featuring a captivating storyline and stellar performances, the film earned critical acclaim. 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' offers a unique perspective on crime and morality. 

 

3. Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010): Considered an experimental film, 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' explored various societal issues through its unique narrative style, incorporating elements of found footage and mockumentary. The film received praise for its bold storytelling and thought-provoking themes, showcasing Banerjee's willingness to push the boundaries of conventional cinema.

 

4. Shanghai (2012): With 'Shanghai', Banerjee delved into the realm of political drama, presenting a gripping narrative set against the backdrop of corrupt politics and urban development. Starring Emraan Hashmi, Farooq Shaikh, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, and Prosenjit Chatterjee, the film is a remake of the 1969 French movie 'Z', which was originally based on the Greek novel 'Z' by Vassilis Vassilikos. Despite facing legal challenges, with the high court refusing to stay its release on June 6, 2012, the film received critical acclaim upon its unveiling. However, despite its positive reception among critics, the film struggled commercially, failing to perform well at the box office.

 

5. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015): Banerjee's adaptation of the iconic fictional detective character Byomkesh Bakshi received praise for its atmospheric storytelling, meticulous period detailing, and stellar performances. Based on the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi created by Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, the film features Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari, Neeraj Kabi, and Swastika Mukherjee in prominent roles. Released on April 3, 2015, the film received positive reviews from critics for its portrayal of the iconic detective character. However, despite critical acclaim, it failed to make a mark at the box office, resulting in commercial disappointment. Plans for a sequel with Rajput reprising his role were in motion, but tragically, following his demise, the project was shelved indefinitely.

 

These directorial ventures highlight Dibakar Banerjee's prowess as a storyteller and his ability to captivate audiences with compelling narratives across diverse genres.
