David Dhawan Recalls Varun Dhawan Being 'Upset' About Sharing Screen With Sidharth Malhotra In SOTY

David Dhawan shared an anecdote about when Karan Johar flew Varun and his 'Student of the Year' (SOTY) co-star Sidharth Malhotra to Goa for a photoshoot, recalling how Varun was upset during the trip.

David Dhawan recently discussed his son Varun Dhawan's journey as an actor on Arbaaz Khan’s show, 'The Invincibles Series'. He shared an anecdote about when Karan Johar flew Varun and his 'Student of the Year' (SOTY) co-star Sidharth Malhotra to Goa for a photoshoot, recalling how Varun was upset during the trip.

David Dhawan shares Varun's acting journey

David Dhawan expressed his surprise at Varun's choice to pursue a career in films, as it was a topic they rarely discussed at home. He explained, "He was studying abroad; he came back. We never talked about films. All of a sudden, he approached Karan Johar and assisted him on 'My Name is Khan'. The cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran, noticed him mouthing dialogues and told Karan, 'You must watch this boy.' One day, Karan came home and told me he wanted to launch him."

Varun's debut film was the 2012 college drama 'Student Of The Year', which also introduced Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. David recounted, "They did a photoshoot for him and Sidharth in Goa. They looked so young, so youthful. Sometimes, Varun would be upset—these things happen in a two-hero film. I told him, 'Son, you’re damn good; your confidence is something else. Just remember, step on the shoulder and jump. That is your success. Don’t be afraid."

David also mentioned that after 'SOTY' was released, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan predicted a long career for Varun in the film industry. This success paved the way for Varun’s second film, 'Main Tera Hero', a Hindi remake of the Telugu film 'Kandireega'.

Varun Dhawan's professional front

Varun Dhawan was last seen reprising his role from 'Bhediya' in the horror-comedy film 'Munjya'. He will soon star in 'Baby John', a Hindi remake of the Tamil film 'Theri'. Additionally, he has 'Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari' and 'Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai' lined up for release.
