Lok Sabha Polls: 55 Voters Aged Above 120 In Tamil Nadu, Nomination Of 309 Rejected

Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo stated that the commission has received seven lakh requests from individuals above 85 years to cast their votes from home.

Tamil Nadu has 55 voters aged above 120. Among them, 27 are men and 28 are women. Additionally, there are 206,574 voters aged between 90 and 99, comprising 99,439 men and 107,128 women, while 1,444,851 voters are above 80 years old, as reported by IANS, citing the Election Commission data.

The total electorate in the state stands at 623,33,925 voters, with males totaling 306,05,793 and females outnumbering them at 317,19,665. Additionally, there are 8,467 third-gender voters.

Among age groups, those aged 40-49 constitute the highest number of voters at 1,37,96,152, followed by the 30-39 age group with 1,29,00,263 voters.

Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo stated that the commission has received seven lakh requests from individuals above 85 years to cast their votes from home. He also mentioned that requests have been made by differently-abled individuals in a similar manner.

According to the final electoral roll released in January 2024 by EC, Shozhinganallur Assembly constituency in Chengalpattu district boasts the highest number of electors, totaling 6,60,419 members (330,522 male, 329,783 female, and 114 third gender). Following closely is the Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency in Coimbatore district with 462,612 electors (2,29,950 male, 2,32,538 female, and 124 third gender).

Conversely, the Kilvelur Assembly constituency in Nagapattinam district holds the lowest number of voters, comprising 1,72,140 electors (84,702 male, 87,435 female, and 3 third gender). Subsequently, the Harbour Assembly constituency in Chennai district follows with 1,72,624 electors (89,569 male, 82,996 female, and 59 third gender).

Regarding applications for inclusion, a total of 526,205 electors fell within the 18-19 age group. Among them, men constituted 274,035, women 252,096, and third gender individuals 74.

In Tamil Nadu, the elections are scheduled in the first phase on April 19. 

Nominations Of 309 TN Candidates Rejected

After scrutiny, the returning officers rejected as many as 309 nomination papers on Thursday. According to the election commission's website, a total of 1,741 candidates, including 238 women, filed their nomination papers to contest from 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. However, 309 papers were rejected. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 30.

Earlier on Thursday, the AIADMK urged election commission officials to reject the candidature of BJP state chief K Annamalai, who filed his papers using court fee stamp paper instead of judicial stamp paper for the Coimbatore seat.

Furthermore, the ruling DMK also sought the dismissal of Annamalai's candidacy, alleging that he had misrepresented his assets in his affidavit.
