Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday (October 6) tried her hand at a charkha during the 'Panchayat Raj Mahasammelan' held in Kanker, Chhattisgarh.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka said that if her party retains power in the state following the upcoming assembly elections, a caste census will be conducted in the state along the lines of a similar exercise in Bihar.

Addressing the 'Nagariya Nikaay Evam Panchayati Raj Mahasammlen', a Congress government event in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district, she also promised ten lakh houses for the poor if her party is re-elected in the year-end elections.

In a scathing attack on the BJP-led government at the Centre, Gandhi claimed it is only interested in the rich and has no concern for the poor or middle class.

"If the Congress party is re-elected in Chhattisgarh, a caste census will be conducted in the state along the lines of the Bihar caste survey," she was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

In the run-up to the elections, the ruling party's announcement is seen as a major move to woo Other Backward Classes (OBC), who account for about 45 percent of the state's population.

Taking a shot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress leader said his guarantees are nothing more than empty promises.

"What happened to Modi's promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh into each citizen's bank account and creating crores of jobs?" Whenever a question is posed, Modi ji issues a new assurance. "His assurances are hollow assurances," she added further.

Gandhi claimed that the BJP-led government in the country has weakened farmers.

Farmers in the country earn only Rs 27 per day, while Adani and other industrialists earn Rs 1,600 crore per day, according to her.

"They (BJP) simply want the country's assets handed over to their industrialist friends, who will then divert them (assets/money) to the party." Then they continue to spend (money) on elections. "Their only goal is to stay in power, not the welfare of the people," Gandhi charged.

She slammed the previous Raman Singh government in Chhattisgarh (2003-2018), claiming that the state was ruled by violence during the BJP's tenure.

Gandhi claimed that after taking power five years ago, the Congress rescued the Naxalite-affected state from the grip of violence.
