Background

Karnal: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Ashwini Kumar from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won the elections by a margin of 360147 votes. The polling / voting in Karnal constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 6 on 12 May. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Shri Sanjay Bhatiya and Congress Party#s Kuldeep Sharma

Karnal 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 7 out of the 10 parliamentary seat with 34.7 percent vote share while the Indian National Lok Dal managed to win just 2 seats with a 24.4 percent vote share.

Voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Karnal Lok Sabha Lok Sabha constituency. The total voter turnout was 70.86% Lok Sabha percent with 73.01% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 68.31% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 2929 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 23 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Karnal, 21 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Ashwini Kumar of the Bharatiya Janta Party as he defeated Arvind Kumar Sharma by a margin of 360147 votes.

  • 2009 Lok Sabha Elections: In 15th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Bahujan Samaj Party candidate by a margin of 76346 votes INC candidate Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma, had got 304698 while BSP got Maratha Virender Verma votes.
  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Arvind Kumar Sharma attained 318948 votes and BJP's I. D. Swami bagged 154186 votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha poll, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJP candidate I.D. Swami attained 433733 votes and INC's Bhajan Lal bagged 285879 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate by a margin of 52061 votes INC candidate Bhajan Lal had got 327750 while BJP got I.D. Swami votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defated Indian National Congress candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BJP candidate Ishwar Dayal Swami attained 338013 votes and INC's Chiranji Lal Sharma bagged 146148 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated JD candidate by a margin of 55172 votes INC candidate Chiranji Lal Sharma had got 200770 while JD got Chasham Pal Singh votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Indian National Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party here Indian National Congress candidate defeated his Bharatiya Janta Party counterpart with a difference of 8673 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated ICJ candidate by a margin of 98952 votes INC candidate Chiranji Lal had got 247063 while ICJ got Devi Singh votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated JNP candidate with a difference of 22328 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Chiranji Lal attained 151786 votes and JNP candidate Sushma Swaraj bagged 129458 votes
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, BLD candidate defated INC candidate in one-sided contest. Here, BLD candidate Bhagwat Dayal attained 340961 votes and INC's Jagdish Prasad bagged 64125 votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated BJS candidate with a difference of 35261 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Madho Ram attained 152249 votes and BJS candidate Rameshwara Nand bagged 116988 votes
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Indian National Congress and BJS; here Indian National Congress candidate defeated his BJS counterpart with a difference of 203 votes.
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, JS candidate defeated INC candidate with a difference of 12710 votes. Here, JS leader Rameshwaranand attained 134458 votes and INC candidate Virender bagged 121748 votes
  • 1951 Lok Sabha Elections: In India's Very First Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated RRP candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Subhadra Joshi attained 203588 votes and RRP's Madhav Acharya bagged 89475 votes.

Jumping parties has augured well for most of BJP candidates, who defected either from state's ruling Trinamool Congress or the Left parties, as they were in the lead in the Lok Sabha polls. The BJP candidates in at least 10 of the state's 42 constituencies have been imported from other parties, or are fresh recruits into the saffron fold.

After close to nine hours of counting, BJP is leading in 18 of the 42 seats in the state, up from only two in 2014, while the Trinamool was ahead in 23 seats, 11 down from 34 which it had won in the last Lok Sabha elections. The Congress became more marginalised leading in only one seat, while for the first time after independence, the Left failed to open its account in the state, as the Trinamool and the BJP engaged in a see-saw battle in many of the seats.

With more security personnel than party workers, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's house and the street leading to her residence in South Kolkata's Kalighat wore a deserted look on Thursday with counting trends for the Lok Sabha polls showing a big increase in the BJP's numbers and a consequent decrease in the ruling party's tally of seats.
