Background

Kaliabor: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Gourav Gogoi from Indian National Congress (INC) won the elections by a margin of 93874 votes. The polling / voting in Kaliabor constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 1 on 11 April. The major contest is between Asom Gana Parishad#s Mani Madhab Mahanta and Congress Party#s Gaurav gogoi

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 7 out of the 14 parliamentary seat with 36.5 percent vote share while the All India United Democratic Front managed to win just 3 seats with a 14.8 percent vote share.

Out of the 13 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Kaliabor, 10 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Gourav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress as he defeated Mrinal Kumar Saikia by a margin of 93874 votes.

  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Asom Gana Parishad candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Tarun Gogoi attained 373542 votes and AGP's Keshab Mahanta bagged 206150 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defated Asom Gana Parishad candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Tarun Gogoi attained 383822 votes and AGP's Keshab Mahanta bagged 151487 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Asom Gana Parishad and Indian National Congress here Asom Gana Parishad candidate defeated his Indian National Congress counterpart with a difference of 1616 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Asom Gana Parishad candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Tarun Gogoi attained 295049 votes and AGP's Debeswar Bora bagged 170330 votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated BLD candidate by a margin of 71157 votes INC candidate Bedabrata Barua had got 155428 while BLD got Ajit Kumar Sarmah votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated CPI candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Bedabrata Barua attained 128268 votes and CPI's Jadu Nath Saikia bagged 27580 votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated SSP candidate with a difference of 47889 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader B. Barua attained 106672 votes and SSP candidate K. Bezbaruah bagged 58783 votes

Bomb squads have reached the spot and a liver of grenade has been found near the bus ticket booking counter.

After an interruption of a few hours, bus services have resumed in the area where the blast took place. Police have taken control of the entire area and travel services have resumed.
