Background

Chidambaram: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Chandrakasi, M from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) won the elections by a margin of 128495 votes. The polling / voting in Chidambaram constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 2 on 18 April. The major contest is between All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam#s P. Chandrasekar and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi#s Thol. Thirumavalavan

Chidambaram 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 37 out of the 39 parliamentary seat with 44.3 percent vote share while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just 1 seats with a 5.5 percent vote share.

Out of the 15 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Chidambaram, 12 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Chandrakasi, M of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam as he defeated Thirumaavalavan, Thol by a margin of 128495 votes.

  • 2009 Lok Sabha Elections: In 15th Lok Sabha election, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi candidate had defeated Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate by a margin of 99083 votes VCK candidate Thirumaa Valavan Thol had got 428804 while PMK got Ponnuswamy,E votes.
  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate had defeated Janata Dal (United) candidate by a margin of 87651 votes PMK candidate Ponnuswamy, E. had got 343424 while JD(U) got Thirumaavalavan Thol votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha poll, Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate defated TMC(M) candidate in one-sided contest. Here, PMK candidate Ponnuswamy, E. attained 345331 votes and TMC(M)'s Thirumavalavan, R. bagged 225768 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Pattali Makkal Katchi and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam here Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate defeated his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam counterpart with a difference of 7955 votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate defated Pattali Makkal Katchi candidate in one-sided contest. Here, DMK candidate Ganesan V attained 336164 votes and PMK's Elumalai.R bagged 159898 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Vallalperuman P. attained 306121 votes and DMK's Sulochana Ayyasamy (W) bagged 169231 votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate with a difference of 28283 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Vallalperuman, P. attained 205229 votes and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate Ayyasamy, A. bagged 176946 votes
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Vallalperuman P. attained 329892 votes and DMK's Kannapiran S. bagged 209001 votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha poll, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, DMK candidate Kulandaivelu V. attained 302523 votes and CPM's Mahalingam S. bagged 163798 votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha poll, ADK candidate defated DMK candidate in one-sided contest. Here, ADK candidate Murugesan A. attained 278406 votes and DMK's Rajangam N. bagged 169172 votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate defeated NCO candidate with a difference of 22398 votes. Here, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader V. Mayavan attained 203059 votes and NCO candidate L. Elayaperumal bagged 180661 votes
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate defeated INC candidate with a difference of 17429 votes. Here, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader V. Mayavan attained 205193 votes and INC candidate L. Elayaperumal bagged 187764 votes
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Indian National Congress and DMK here Indian National Congress candidate defeated his DMK counterpart with a difference of 4060 votes.
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated IND candidate by a margin of 58010 votes INC candidate R. Kanagasabai Pillai had got 176501 while IND got Arumugham votes.
