Background

Belgaum: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Angadi Suresh Channabasappa from Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won the elections by a margin of 75860 votes. The polling / voting in Belgaum constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 3 on 23 April. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Suresh Chanabasappa Angadi and Congress Party#s Virupakshi s. Sadhunnavar

Belgaum 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 17 out of the 28 parliamentary seat with 43 percent vote share while the Indian National Congress managed to win just 9 seats with a 40.8 percent vote share.

Out of the 15 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Belgaum, 13 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Angadi Suresh Channabasappa of the Bharatiya Janta Party as he defeated Laxmi R. Hebbalkar by a margin of 75860 votes.

Here, Indian National Congress leader Amarsinh Vasantarao Patil attained 383444 votes and Bharatiya Janta Party candidate Babagouda Patil bagged 333546 votes
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 97057 votes BJP candidate Babagouda Rudragouda Patil had got 327891 while INC got S.B.Sidnal votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, JD candidate had defeated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate by a margin of 70637 votes JD candidate Koujalagi Shivanand Hemappa had got 224479 while BJP got Babagouda Patil votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated KRS candidate with a difference of 46109 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Sidnal Shanmukhappa Basappa attained 161391 votes and KRS candidate Babagouda Rudragouda Patil bagged 115282 votes
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated JD candidate with a difference of 23048 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Sidnal Shanmukappa Bassappa attained 210329 votes and JD candidate Amar Vasantrao Patil bagged 187281 votes
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated JNP candidate with a difference of 35540 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Sidnal Shanmukhappa Basappa attained 202506 votes and JNP candidate Appayyagouda Basagouda Patil bagged 166966 votes
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Independent candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC(I) candidate Sidnal Shanmukhappa Basappa attained 217527 votes and IND's Anand Balakrishna Gogate bagged 76330 votes.

  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated NCO candidate by a margin of 77176 votes INC candidate Kotrasetti Appaya Karavirappa had got 164979 while NCO got Naghanoor Mugutasab Nabisab votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated RPI candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate N. M. Nabisab attained 192046 votes and RPI's K. D. Appa bagged 69729 votes.
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated REP candidate with a difference of 18077 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Balavantrao Nagesharao Datar attained 139664 votes and REP candidate Datta Appa Katti bagged 121587 votes
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated BJS candidate by a margin of 64903 votes INC candidate Datar Balwantrao Nageshrao had got 122408 while BJS got Kulkarni Keshav Vaman votes.
  • 1951 Lok Sabha Elections: In India's Very First Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated KMPP candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Datar Balwant Nagesh attained 133176 votes and KMPP's Chikodi Panditappa Rayappa bagged 31462 votes.
