UGC Guidelines Case LIVE Updates: The Supreme Court's final decision has been announced on the conduct of final year university examinations. The anxious wait of the final year students of universities across India is over, as the Supreme Court has said that Exams are Mandatory but the states can approach the UG for the postponement of Exams. Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava read out the verdict which said that states can't promote students without conducting exams, therefore exams are necessary. However, it is not compulsory to conduct the exams before Sept 30 keeping in view of the rising coronavirus cases

Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the students are apprehensive of taking their examinations, as it would require them to travel from their hometowns to their respective universities. The different restrictions in place in different states, adds to the fuss of the students.

The decision by Supreme Court is out today, and the suspense continuing for months ends!

Students have been waiting for clarity and expected the SC to give a decision in the last hearing held on August 18, 2020. But the court had reserved its verdict and given all the parties three days-time to present their final arguments.

On July 6, the UGC had issued guidelines that stated it was mandatory for Universities to conduct the final year exams using any– pen and paper, online, or a combination of both by September 30th, 2020. Soon after multiple petitions were filed against the decision which included a plea filed by 31 students from different states and by Maharashtra's Yuva Sena. The apex court began hearing the case from July 31.

SC VERDICT
Decision taken by State Disaster Management Authorities to promote final year students on the basis of previous results and internal assessment is beyond the jurisdiction/ powers under the DM Act and has to give way to the UGC guidelines.
