NMC Withdraws Decision On 40% Passing Marks For MBBS

The NMC has withdrawn its earlier guideline to reduce the MBBS passing marks to 40 percent.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its earlier ruling to reduce the MBBS passing marks to 40 percent. This reversal comes after the commission thoroughly reviewed the matter and concluded that implementing this change retrospectively would not be feasible. NMC has stated that reducing the MBBS passing marks cutoff to 40 percent is "not feasible." In September, the National Medical Commission (NMC) officially announced an amendment to the CBME guidelines. According to this amendment, the passing marks for the MBBS exam were lowered from 50 percent to 40 percent.

In an official notification released, the commission said, "This is in continuation to new Amendment in CBME guidelines issued through 'Corrigendum' bearing No.F.No.U/1402t/B/2023-UGMEB dated OL.O|.ZOZ3 where a new amendment was introduced to the CBME Guidelines vide page number -58. After thorough consideration of the subject matter, it has been decided that retrospective effect in this connection is not possible."

The criteria for passing marks were modified as follows:

Original CBME guidelines (Page 58): "In subjects that have two papers, the learner must secure a minimum 50% of marks in aggregate (both papers together) to pass in the said subject. Criteria for passing in a subject: A candidate should obtain 50% marks in university-conducted examination separately in theory and in practical (practical includes practical/clinical and viva voce) in order to be declared as passed in that subject."

Criteria for passing in a subject: MBBS students should obtain 50% aggregate marks and 60:40 (minimum) or 40:60 (minimum) in university-conducted examinations separately in theory and in practical (practical includes practical, clinical, and viva voce) in order to be declared as passed in that subject."
