Winter brings a merry cheer, especially to Mumbai where the cool breeze provides a welcome break from the unforgiving Mumbai weather. But apart from the excitement for Christmas and contemplation of a new year, there’s one more thing exciting about winters-Mood Indigo!

Mood Indigo-Asia’s largest cultural festival is a festival in its true sense. Preparations begin months before. Students from various departments come together to put up this extravaganza and this gives birth to many remarkable memories and friendships that last for life.

All the hard work finally comes to fruition when the much-awaited festival commences. It gives students a much-needed chance to unwind and escape the stressful semester, and as long as the festival lasts, all worries are forgotten.

Mood Indigo is not just a fest but an emotion, an expression of euphoria with a footfall of more than 1,46,000 students, hosting more than 240 events.

But how did Mood Indigo become what it is today? The history of Mood Indigo is indeed a rich one. Mood Indigo was started back in 1971 by a group of enthusiastic students. The budget at the time was a mere Rs 5000 contributed partly by the IIT Bombay Gymkhana and partly by advertisements.

A group of the first Mood Indigo organizers - gave the festival its name from Duke Ellington's Jazz piece 'Mood Indigo'. Mood Indigo, affectionately called Moodi or MI, has grown a lot since then.

The 1981 edition of MI saw the widely celebrated duo of music stalwarts Asha Bhosle and R D Burman perform at the Indian Music Night. As it grew, MI garnered international recognition. It saw the first international night in the form of an Ensiferum concert in 2008.

Over the years, MI has witnessed performances by legends like Asha Bhosle, RD Burman, Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and Amit Trivedi. MI '11 also entered the Limca Book of Records for the most number of international artists in a college festival.

Ever since 2013, Mood Indigo has adopted a unique theme and social initiative, and eminent personalities in the respective fields have graced the occasion.

In recent years, MI has hosted even more Bollywood celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurana, Yami Gautam, Anushka Sharma, Imran Khan, Arjun Rampal, Chitrangada Singh, and beloved stand-up comedians like Zakir Khan, Aakash Gupta, and Abhishek Upmanyu.

It is easy to get lost in the magic of Mood Indigo. Huddled up with your friends on a chilly winter night, around a campfire that brings a sense of warmth and joy, you barely realize when night turns into day. Sleepless nights are common during the preparations but adrenaline and anticipation never let enthusiasm die down.

At the end of this grand celebration, you will often find yourselves having deep conversations with people you barely knew a month ago; such are the friendships that MI nurtures. Many years down the line, you’ll catch yourself smiling at something that happened during one of the MI’s you attended, for the memories made during MI stay with you for life!

Mood Indigo has evolved to be a platform for global cultural interaction over the years. The plethora of activities that Mood Indigo hosts present both - raw, undiscovered talents and pro-shows. It is a melting pot of artists and art forms from around the world.

This amalgamation of talents makes Mood Indigo every college student’s dream. Every year, the MI team works hard so that Mood Indigo lives up to its name in providing an unparalleled experience to its visitors.

Besides being a euphoric experience, MI also provides great learning opportunities to the students. This grand celebration of joy culminates in happy faces, warm hearts, and anticipation for what’s to come next year.
