Kanjhawala Case: Accused Tell Police They Knew Anjali Was Stuck Under Car, Didn't Stop Out Of Fear

The five accused arrested in the Kanjhawala case told the police they were aware that a woman was stuck under their car but continued driving.

New Delhi: The five accused arrested in the Kanjhawala case, in which a 20-year-old woman was dragged for several kilometres by a car that hit her scooter, reportedly told the police they were aware that a woman was stuck under a car but continued driving because of fear.

The accused mentioned it in their disclosure, based on which section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC was included in the case, reported Hindustan Times citing an officer, who is aware of the development. Notably, disclosure by the accused before police is not admissible in court.

Anjali Singh was killed in the early hours of the New Year after her scooter was hit by a car dragged her for 12 km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in the national capital by taking multiple U-turns.

Earlier, the police had arrested five people including Deepak Khanna (26), Amit Khanna (25), Krishan (27), Mithun (26), and Manoj Mittal in the case. The five accused are currently in four-day police custody and booked for various offences including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and rash driving in a public way, the report added.

Later, the police got hold of Ashutosh and arrested him last week along with Ankush Khanna for allegedly shielding the accused. The police said it was Ashutosh who had given the car to Amit, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj on December 31. In fact, he reportedly helped them get away with the crime after the incident by giving false information to the police trying to mislead the probe.

A Delhi court on Sunday granted bail to Ankush Khanna who allegedly shielded the accused in the Kanjhawala incident, reported PTI. After observing that the charges against him were bailable, Metropolitan Magistrate Sanya Dalal granted the relief to Khanna, who had surrendered on Friday.

"Offences alleged are bailable in nature. Hence accused is granted bail on furnishing personal bond of Rs 20,000 along with one surety of like amount," the judge said.

The court also asked Khanna to join the investigation as and when required by the Investigating Officer, attend the trial and not tamper with the evidence. The police sought 14 days of judicial custody for the accused during the proceedings.

In another development in the case, it was reported that the friend of the accident victim, Neha was earlier arrested in a drug smuggling case in Uttar Pradesh and was currently out on bail, news agency ANI reported citing police sources. She and two other men were arrested on December 6, 2020, from Agra railway station for allegedly carrying ganja on a train, reports stated.
