'Delhi's Water Crisis Will Worsen': Atishi Writes To Haryana CM Over 'Inadequate Supply', Urges LG To Intervene

Delhi minister Atishi wrote to Haryana CM Nayab Saini asking him to release adequate amount of water from Munak Canal. She also urged the Delhi LG to intervene in the matter and resolve it.

Amid the ongoing water crisis in Delhi, AAP leader Atishi Singh wrote to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini over the "inadequate release of water from the Munak Canal". Stating how the water treatement plants in the national capital are dependent on water from Haryana's Munak, the Delhi Minister said that if the quantum of water supply is not increased today then the national capital will witness a "worsening water crisis in the next few days".

Atishi also sought time from the LG of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, for an "emergency meeting" to draw his attention towards the inadequate water supply from Haryana and asked him to intervene and resolve the issue.

"Delhi is supposed to receive 1050 cusecs of water from the Munak Canal via the CLC and DSB sub-canals. However, this has reduced to 840 cusecs. 7 Water Treatment Plants are dependent on this water. If the amount of water does not increase today, then the water situation across Delhi will worsen in 1-2 days," the AAP Minister tweeted.

'People In Delhi Suffering Unjustifiably': Atishi In Letter To Saini

In the letter to Nayab Saini, Atishi wrote: "As you are aware, Delhi is dependent on water from Yamuna for our day-to-day needs. However, for the past few days, Haryana has not been releasing adequate amount of water in the Munak Canal. As a result of this, the people living in the national capital have been suffering unjustifiably."

She further mentioned that as per the agreement in the the 53rd meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board on May 2018, Delhi was allocated around 1050 Cusec (i.e. 568 MGD) was allocated at Munak through CLC and DSB Canals.

However, due to the transmission loss, this allocation corresponds to about 1013 Cusec (i.e. 548 MGD).

"On an average, the water received at the Bawana contact point even in the summers - is between 980 and 1030 cusecs. However in the last one week this has seen a drastic reduction, as can be seen from the table," Atishi wrote.

Atishi, in a post on X, also shared the water supply table she mentioned about in the letter.

Delhi's Water Crisis Will Worsen': Atishi Writes To Haryana CM Over 'Inadequate Supply', Urges LG To Intervene

"There are seven Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in Delhi that are dependent upon Yamuna water. Due to the deficit of raw water our water treatment plants are unable to run at their optimum capacity. If Haryana doesn't release the adequate amount of water by today, Delhi will have a major crisis in next 1-2 days. Therefore, I humbly request you to ensure that 1050 cusecs water is released from Munak Canal for Delhi," the Delhi Minister wrote while resquesting the Haryana CM to proivde the required water supply to Delhi.
