Strong Tremors Felt In Delhi-NCR, Other Parts Of India As 6.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal

Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and other parts of North India as a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal.

Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and other parts of North India on Friday as a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed. The earthquake, which occurred at 23:32:54 IST, had a depth of 10 kilometers and was located in Nepal with coordinates 28.84° latitude and 82.19° longitude, the NCS stated. This incident marks the third occurrence of earthquake tremors in the Delhi-NCR region in recent times.

Besides NCR, visuals also surfaced from Bihar's capital city Patna

"I was watching TV and felt like little dizzy all of a sudden...then I saw on the TV about earthquake and suddenly I came out of my home", a resident of Noida told news agency ANI.

"I was lying on bed and it started shaking and I noticed even the ceiling fan was moving so I came out of my home," ANI quoted a resident of Patna as saying.

On October 15, an earthquake measuring 3.1 in magnitude sent tremors through the Delhi-NCR region. The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicentre located 9 kilometers east of Faridabad, Haryana, at coordinates 28.41° latitude and 77.41° longitude, as per the National Center for Seismology.

On October 3, tremors were felt in the NCR as a result of two earthquakes originating in Nepal occurring in quick succession. The first quake, registering a magnitude of 4.6, struck Nepal at a depth of 10 kilometers around 2:25 pm IST. A more powerful tremor, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, followed just 25 minutes later at 2:51 pm IST.

Frequent Earthquakes In Nepal

Nepal has been experiencing frequent seismic activity as the latest quake also follows two earlier ones originating in the same region on October 3 and October 22.

On October 3, the first quake registered a magnitude of 4.6 and the second, more powerful tremor measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Kathmandu on October 22, damaged 20 houses and caused panic among the population. While there were no reported casualties, landslides were reported in various parts of the Dhading district, PTI reported citing local media.

The region continued to experience further tremors, with three earthquakes of magnitudes over 4 occurring in Dhading district on October 22.

Nepal's Sudurpaschim province was also struck by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake on October 16.

Nepal has a history of significant earthquakes, with the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in 2015 resulting in around 9,000 deaths and nearly 22,000 injuries, while 3.5 million people were rendered homeless.

Nepal is considered one of the most earthquake-prone countries globally, according to the government’s post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report, ranking 11th in this regard.
