Civil Aviation Ministry Warns Airlines Against Price Surge As Flight Cancelled After Delhi Airport T1 Roof Collapse

Following the partial roof collapse at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, the Civil Aviation Ministry instructed airlines to prevent excessive airfare increases for flights to and from Delhi.

Following the closure of Terminal 1 (T1) at Delhi Airport due to a partial roof collapse, the Civil Aviation Ministry issued instructions on Friday to airlines to prevent excessive increases in airfares for flights to and from Delhi. The incident, which took place around 5 am, resulted in one fatality and injured at least six others. As per a report by news agency PTI, due to the closure of T1, which manages IndiGo and SpiceJet's domestic flight operations, there have been flight cancellations, and operations have been temporarily shifted to T2 and T3.

In light of this, a senior official stated on Friday that the ministry has requested all the airlines to ensure there isn't an unusual spike in the cost of tickets for travel to and from Delhi.

The ministry stated in a series of posts on its social media handle X that airlines have been informed that cancellations and rescheduling of flights due to the incident may be made without penal charges. "In view of the unfortunate incident at Terminal T1D IGIA, Delhi, all airlines are advised to monitor any abnormal surge in airfares to and from Delhi and take necessary action regarding the same," it said.

In the released official letter on X of Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu wrote after the collapse of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1, "Following the collapse of the Delhi T1 terminal this morning, - I have personally inspected the site. Our immediate priority was the safe evacuation of all passengers from the terminal. Consequently, all flights scheduled until 2 PM have been canceled. Passengers will receive full refunds or have the option to rebook on alternative flights and routes. Flights scheduled to depart after 2 PM will be operated from T2 and T3."

"I will see that a thorough examination of the terminal's structure is conducted by experts to ensure safety. In response to this incident, all relevant agencies, including DGCA, BCAS, CISE, Delhi Police, and NDRE, have been working in close coordination and putting their best efforts," he wrote.

"We are committed to providing compensation to the family of the deceased and those injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji is closely monitoring the situation and has assured us of full support. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unfortunate event," the statement read.

PTI cited a source stating that following the T1 incident, IndiGo has cancelled 62 flight departures and 7 flight arrivals. While SpiceJet has cancelled 8 flight departures and 4 flight arrivals.
