AAP, BJP File Police Complaint Over Ruckus In Delhi MCD House

AAP and the BJP have registered police complaints following clashes between councillors in the MCD House after Mayor Shelly Oberoi declared one vote invalid in the election to the standing committee.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party have registered complaints with Delhi Police following clashes between councillors in the MCD House, officials said on Saturday, as reported by the news agency PTI. According to a senior police officer, The police have received complaints from both the parties and further action will be taken accordingly, a senior police officer said.

A fight between AAP and BJP members broke out on Friday in the MCD House as the members of both the parties kicked, punched and pushed one another amid shouting after Mayor Shelly Oberoi declared one vote invalid in the election to the key six-member standing committee.

During the ruckus, which forced the adjournment of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House proceedings till February 27, a councillor, Ashok Manu, collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, PTI reported. Both the BJP and the AAP blamed each other for the incident that forced the mayor to adjourn the House.

According to PTI, one video showed councillors from both parties hurling water bottles and apples at each other inside the House while in another, women councillors could be seen hitting each other.

Earlier on Friday, an uproar erupted once more during the standing committee elections at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House session, with 242 of the 250 councillors casting their ballots. Under the instruction of new Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, a new election was held to elect six members of the MCD's highest decision-making body.

Following the commotion, today's session was adjourned, and the poll is rescheduled to take place on Monday. The counting of ballots was halted after the BJP objected to one vote being declared invalid. According to the Mayor, an invalid vote cannot be considered valid, and the result will be declared without the invalid vote. Following that, members of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP yelled insults at one another.
