Skulls, Bones Of Fetuses Recovered From Premises Of Pvt Hospital In Maharashtra’ Wardha

An official said the recovery which came to light when the police were investigating a separate case of illegal abortion.

Nagpur: At least 11 skulls and 54 bones of fetuses were found in the premises of a private hospital in Maharashtra’s Wardha district, police on Thursday said.

The official said the police, acting on a tip-off, searched a biogas plant located in the premises of Kadam Hospital in Arvi tehsil on Wednesday and found 11 skulls and 54 bones of fetuses, which have been sent for laboratory examination.

He added that a probe was underway to ascertain if the recovered bones and skulls were disposed of legally or illegally.

Bhanudas Pidurkar, Inspector, Arvi Police Station, said that a doctor named Rekha Kadam and a nurse of the hospital were based on a complaint arrested earlier on January 9 for allegedly performing an illegal abortion on a 13-year-old girl.

The police also nabbed the parents of a minor boy, who allegedly impregnated the girl with whom he was in a relationship.

The police official said the boy’s parents had threatened the parents of the victim that they would defame the girl if she did not undergo an abortion, adding they paid for the procedure last week.

The official further said the accused were arrested under relevant Sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after a complaint of illegal abortion was lodged.

The doctor, as per the police, had failed to inform the authorities about performing an abortion on a girl under 18 years of age.

The accused doctor’s parents-in-law, who are also physicians, have a license to perform abortions, said Wardha Superintendent of Police Prashant Holkar, reported PTI.

Stating that a probe is underway to ascertain if the bones and skulls recovered from the biogas plant were disposed of legally or illegally, the senior official added that the accused doctor has not produced any documents in this regard.
