The student lodged a complaint with the police, prompting Ashrafi to flee the state. He reportedly evaded authorities by hiding in various locations across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Acting on a tip-off that Ashrafi would be returning to his home district from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, a police team positioned themselves in Tanur on Thursday.
Despite attempting to escape upon spotting the police, Ashrafi was apprehended.
Following his arrest, Kannavam police have charged him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was presented before a local court, which remanded him to judicial custody on Friday.
Two years ago, twelve children from Bihar were allegedly subjected to torture and severe beatings with cables for not memorizing the Quran at a madrassa-cum-orphanage in Madhavaram, Chennai. Acting on a tip-off, police intervened, rescuing the children and arresting two individuals running the institution. ChildLine authorities received a report on Tuesday regarding the alleged abuse at Madrassa Walayathul Islam Yateem Khana in Ponniamman Medu, Madhavaram.
Following the report, members of the Child Welfare Committee conducted an inspection at the site. Their investigation revealed that twelve children from Bihar had been brought to Chennai and housed in the madrassa, managed by Abdullah and Akthar, both from Bihar. Later, it was also found out that the home did not possess a license under Juvenile Justice Act nor JJ Board. Following this, a case was registered against the trust.
