Retired Punjab Cop Shoots Son-In-Law Dead In Chandigarh Court Amid Divorce Hearing, Arrested
In Chandigarh, retired Punjab Police AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu shot and killed his son-in-law Harpreet Singh, an IRS officer, during a divorce hearing.
Chandigarh Court Firing: In a shocking incident on Saturday, a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police, Malvinder Singh Sidhu, allegedly shot dead his son-in-law, Harpreet Singh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, at the Chandigarh District Court. Harpreet Singh was present in court for a hearing related to his ongoing divorce case with his wife.
According to police sources, Harpreet Singh, who worked in the agriculture department, had been involved in a protracted divorce case. Both parties were attending a session at the court's Mediation Centre, ABP Sanjha reported. During the proceedings, Malvinder Singh Sidhu requested to use the bathroom and took Harpreet outside under the pretext of asking for directions. Once outside, he allegedly shot Harpreet twice, causing him to collapse on the spot. Bystanders rushed Harpreet to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Chandigarh Court: Accused Malvinder Singh Held At Spot, Pistol & Live Bullets Recovered
The gunfire caused panic within the court premises. Lawyers present at the scene detained the accused and locked him in a room before informing the police. The police arrived promptly, took Malvinder Singh into custody, and recovered a .32 bore pistol along with four spent and three live bullets from him.
According to news agency ANI, Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur told the media, "We received information about firing at the Mediation Centre of the District Court at around 2 pm today. Police reached the spot and found that the victim's name was Harpreet Singh and he was taken to the hospital, but he died there. The alleged accused was apprehended on the spot and taken into police custody and a weapon was recovered from him."

"The alleged accused is retired AIG of Punjab Police Malvinder Singh. The FSL team has been called and the spot is being investigated. We are also speaking to eyewitnesses. It is being investigated from which gate the alleged accused entered the court. We have recovered a .32 bore pistol from him and we have recovered 4 fired bullets and 3 unused bullets... Divorce proceedings were going on between the two families and today was the fourth meeting at the Mediation Centre. Further investigation is being done," she added.
