Kolkata News: R.G. Kar Medical College has expelled 10 doctors for serious allegations, including sexual misconduct, forceful collection of money, and threats. They were allegedly close to Sandip Ghosh.

Kolkata News: The authorities at state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital have expelled 10 doctors, including interns, house staff, and senior residents, citing serious charges of sexual misconduct, financial irregularities, and a culture of threats. According to a notification, the expelled individuals were allegedly close to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the institution, who is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The 10 expelled include house staff Ashish Pandey, who is already in CBI custody for his involvement in financial irregularities, and Ayushree Thapa, the sole female doctor in the group, news agency IANS reported. The other expelled doctors are Sourav Pal, Abhishek Sen, Nirjan Bagchi, Sarif Hasan, Neelagni Debnath, Amarendra Singh, Satpal Singh, and Tanweer Ahmed Kazi.

Charges against the group include threatening students with academic failure or eviction from the hostel, forcing juniors to join a political party, sexual harassment, forceful collection of money, lodging false FIRs, and physical violence against targeted students. As per the notification, the doctors must vacate the hostel within 72 hours, and their registration papers will be scrutinised before being forwarded to the West Bengal Medical Council for further action, IANS' report stated.

Kolkata: Protesting Doctors’ Indefinite Fast Enters Day 2

The expulsion comes as protests intensify over the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in August, a case that has sparked widespread outrage. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), which is leading the protests, announced a fast-unto-death. While medical services have resumed at hospitals, six junior doctors—three female and three male—have started a fast-unto-death protest, which entered its second day on Sunday.

A representative of the WBJDF said, “We have withdrawn our cease-work agitation keeping in mind the interest of the patients. But at the same time, six of us have started the hunger strike agitation to send a message to the state government of not succumbing unless our demands are fulfilled.”

The doctors have vowed to continue their protest until action is taken against those responsible for the heinous crime.
