An elderly woman and her two granddaughters were killed after a three-storey building collapsed in Jam Khambhalia town in Gujarat's Devbhumi Dwarka district amid heavy rainfall in the state.

Three members of a family were killed after a building collapsed in Khambhalia taluka of Dwarka district in Gujarat on Tuesday evening. An NDRF team rushed to the spot after getting the information about the collapse to rescue the trapped. However, it was not possible to rescue the trio.

"Our team reached the site immediately after receiving the information of a roof collapse. We pulled out three people from the rubble," NDRF inspector Bipin Kumar said after a six-hour rescue operation.

The incident was reported from the Gagwani Fali area. A total of eight people were trapped under the Debris. According to news agency PTI, the deceased were identified as Kesharben Kanjaria (65), and her granddaughters Pritiben Kanjaria (15) and Payalben Kanjaria (18). Five people trapped under the debris were rescued by the NDRF team.

Gujarat Bears Brunt Of Heavy Rain

Severe rainfall has been battering the regions of Saurashtra and South Gujarat since Monday, July 22, flooding multiple villages and disrupting connectivity. In the 24 hours ending at 6 AM on Wednesday, Umarpada taluka in Surat district received 276 mm rainfall. Low-lying areas in Navsari, Junagadh, Devbhumi Dwarka, Kutch, Dangs and Tapi districts have also been flooded.

Earlier, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in Devbhoomi Dwarka district, where an Indian Air Force helicopter was deployed to extricate three individuals stranded amidst the deluge.

The Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhoomi Dwarka district bore the brunt of the torrential rains, receiving a staggering 281 mm of precipitation within a 12-hour window. As floodwaters surged, NDRF teams sprang into action, rescuing eight people marooned in Keshavpura and Tankaria villages.

However, three others remained trapped in Paneli village, inaccessible to NDRF personnel. In a remarkable display of interagency coordination, the Chief Minister's Office, Revenue Department, and State Relief Commissioner collaborated to dispatch an Indian Air Force helicopter, which successfully airlifted the stranded individuals to Jamnagar Air Force Station.

As the region braces for another round of heavy rains on July 30, authorities have issued advisories cautioning fishermen against venturing into the sea for the next five days, with Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, and Chhota Udaipur likely to be affected.
