Ola’s founder, Bhavish Aggarwal, found himself in the middle of a social media controversy as he suggested the Indian rupee sign to replace the dollar sign on computer and laptop keyboards.
The Ola head in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday called for changing the sign on electronics sold in India. “Maybe this has something to do with it! Wonder why the $ is not replaced with ₹ in products sold in India,” he said. The Indian rupee sign is denoted by ‘₹’, while the US dollar is represented by ‘$’.

The post received 2.5 million views, however, Netizens weren’t impressed with the founder’s suggestions. One of the users proposed that the company should use ‘ओला’ as a logo instead of OLA on their vehicles first.
Meanwhile, another user explained the importance of using $ sign in the keyboards. “Only a person who works on MS Excel know the answer. $ is used to freeze Row or column in excel formulas and ₹ can't do that. That's why $ is used universally for that purpose. However, you can anytime use ₹ in your computer,” she wrote.
One of the Netizens commented and suggested that the company should implement these changes itself first and lead with example. The user said that the founder for his next presentation in India, should use Indian rupee instead of dollars in it. Notably, Aggarwal came in limelight recently when he compared himself and his business with Elon Musk and his firm Tesla.
Change begins at home.
