More than 500 Amazon Employees Send Open Letter To Web Services CEO Garman Against Work From Office Policy

Over 500 employees of the firm signed a letter to the CEO of the Amazon Web Services unit, Matt Garman and urged him to reconsider his stance on making employees return to office completely

Amazon employees are continuing to fight against the return-to-office (RTO) mandate issued by the tech giant. As a sign of protest, over 500 employees of the firm signed a letter to the CEO of the Amazon Web Services unit, Matt Garman and urged him to reconsider his stance on making employees return to office completely.

Earlier, Garman said that employees will have to work five days from office instead of three, reported Moneycontrol. The announcement has since caused a lot of unrest among the tech firm’s employees.

In the letter, dated October 17, the employees said, “As employees of AWS and Amazon who work tirelessly every day to obsess over and innovate on behalf of our customers, we were appalled to hear the non-data-driven explanation you gave for Amazon imposing a 5-day in-office mandate at the AWS Global Meeting on October 17th.”

The letter was seen by Business Insider. The news agency reported that the letter read, “By rigidly mandating a 5-day in-office culture and telling employees who cannot or will not contribute to the company's mission in this specific way that 'there are other companies around,' you are silencing critical perspectives and damaging our culture and our future in doing so.”

While announcing the policy change, Garman said that majority of the company’s workers agreed with his decision and those not on board with the return-to-work mandate can look for employment opportunities elsewhere.

Notably, a survey conducted last month found that 73 per cent of the company’s employees are planning to quit after the recent mandate from Amazon. Majority of the employees expressed that they were ‘overwhelmingly dissatisfied’ with the firm’s decision.
