Modi meets Trump: Change in continuity?

New  Delhi: All eyes are glued to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. Both have spoken over the phone a couple of times, but, on Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will meet for the first time in face-to-face talks at the White House. Speculations are running high and just before the meeting, PM Modi in Wall Street Journal op-ed said-"In uncertain global economic landscape, India & US are mutually reinforcing engines of growth & innovation". How sugary and fruitful the meeting will be, soon we all know but one thing is sure that PM will stress on "Make in India" and President will emphasise on "Make in USA". Interestingly, US President, who campaigned on an "America First" platform, is now disturbed by the growing US trade deficit with India. Members of the Indian community will also want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the contentious H-1B visa issue in addition to defence cooperation and terrorism during his first bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump. US President will host Modi at the White House on Monday. The two leaders would spend nearly five hours together in various settings beginning with their bilateral discussion. PM ahead of his visit had said that he looked forward to the opportunity of having an in-depth exchange of views. However, how much in-depth it will be, we will find out within hours from now. However, the Trump administration has said that if the Indian side raises the contentious H-1B visa issue during the meeting, the Americans are ready to respond. Remember the famous event at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden in September (2014) in which chants of Modi filled the place? The episode was possibly one of the biggest for any international leader visiting the US. But now the time has changed and Uncle Sam's USA is a changed country now under the mercurial President Donald Trump. It may be recalled that earlier this month, Donald Trump had said the US would pull out of from the Paris climate agreement. He had accused India of negotiating unscrupulously for the accord in order to walk away with billions of dollars in aid. This soft-hard attitude of USA towards India under the Trump administration is known to all. And on our part, our PM is also not the one who can be pressed down. When the two powerful people meet, the result is always interesting...and this time we are hoping something special.
