Hyundai EV in India: Hyundai Developing First Mass Market EV For India, Launch In Few Years

The EV space currently has few cars and while sales numbers are growing, it is still a small part of total car sales.

New Delhi: Hyundai Motor India is developing its first mass market EV and it should hit the Indian roads in 3 years time. Before that Hyundai is also ramping up its EV presence and would be expected to have many more EVs to hit the Indian market. Recently, the carmaker launched its ‘Beyond Mobility' campaign showcasing its zero emissions products like the Hyundai Nexo and more.

The campaign focuses on technologies and sustainable initiatives while hinting at what to expect from Hyundai in a few years. It is official that the first mass market EV would be its strategic small SUV towards the budget end. For that it is expected that the carmaker has invested in this mass market EV developed for India with affordable pricing and a good range being all but a given.

Currently, Hyundai has the Kona EV but we might expect some more new products in the premium space before and then the mass market EV. The updated Kona EV with styling tweaks could be once such a new product while the Ioniq 5, displayed at the HQ of the market also might be a potential luxury SUV EV.

We expect the said mass market EV to be a ground up design in terms of being a small SUV with a price-tag expected to compete with the current affordable EV SUVs.

The EV space currently has few cars and while sales numbers are growing, it is still a small part of total car sales. With rising fuel prices, EV adoption might become quicker but as all car-makers agree it needs a helping hand from the Government, better infrastructure too going forward.
