EXPLAINED | What Is Hyundai E-GMP Electric Car Platform For India

Hyundai E-GMP Electric Car: Electric cars are different from conventional cars and an electric platform means more space within a compact exterior body.

Hyundai E-GMP Electric Car: Electric cars have taken a big jump in terms of consumer interest and fuel prices have played a hand in that. Hyundai, as it was announced yesterday and also previously reported by us, plans to expand its EV range in a big way. Yesterday, the carmaker announced some concrete plans to not just launch EVs but create an ecosystem along with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore towards its EV plans.

Hyundai has said it will launch 6 BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) by 2028. Of further interest is that it will bring its BEV Platform E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) to India which will form the base for its premium EVs and also its mass-market EVs. It is clear that within the 6 launches, the mass market EV as reported by us a few days back will also be based on a localized version of the E-GMP.

So we need to understand electric cars before anything else and that starts with the platform. An electric car needs a different platform since it has different components. An electric car based on a petrol/diesel platform will have compromises hence the E-GMP platform was created by Hyundai for its EVs. Simply put, E-GMP is a dedicated platform for EVs and will comprise the battery, motor, and power electric system along with its scalable wheelbase.

An electric car platform also means provisions to fit a bigger battery pack and this platform will get around 550km range for a single charge. Another crucial bit is charging. A dedicated platform like E-GMP brings a rapid charging facility at 800V charging capability- something which can be seen in the future in terms of charging infrastructure.

Final bit is the space. Electric cars are different from conventional cars and an electric platform means more space within a compact exterior body. The cabin can be bigger and a flat floor will mean more space. Hence, it explains how electric cars are different and how much investment they require.

Hence, while your next car could be electric, rest assured it's not just about putting a battery pack or an electric motor- it's a lot more than that!
