Andhra Pradesh: Experts From Kerala Varsity Inspect Tirumala Ghat Road, To Report On Prevention Of Landslides

A team of experts from Kerala Amrita University examined the landslide-prone areas on Tirumala Second Ghat Road on Sunday.

Andhra Pradesh:  The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is preparing a master plan for the Tirumala Ghat Road and measures tobe undertaken to prevent rain-related problems in the future.

As part of this, a team of experts working on an international project under the World Center of Excellence on Landslide Disaster Reduction at Amrita University, Kollam, Kerala, examined the cliffs Sunday. TTD had invited them to inspect the sites and suggest precautions and instructions on how to prevent landslides.

The experts from Kerala will conduct a comprehensive survey, using latest scientific know-how, and report to TTD suggesting ways to rehabilitate landslide-prone areas.

Landslides on Tirumala's Second Ghat Road were triggered by recent heavy rainfall. Massive rocks weighing hundreds of tonnes dropped from above, destroying the road and defence structures.

The road suffered damage at three places. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is making efforts to repair the stretches.

Earlier, Delhi IIT experts had inspected the Ghat Road when officials from the TTD engineering department explained the condition of the road. Experts believe a separate route to Tirumala hill would be preferable. They wanted to study the situation thoroughly as the mountains were formed almost a thousand years ago.

TTD Chairman YV Subba Reddy recently reviewed the Tirumala Ghat Road issue, during which TTD decided to take steps towards a permanent solution.
