Trump touts 'new rules of engagement' in Afghanistan

Washington DC [United States], Jan 31 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump has dwelled on Afghanistan, in his first official State of the Union speech, saying that the US military in the war-torn South Asian nation has "new rules of engagement."

"Our warriors in Afghanistan also have new rules of engagement. Along with their heroic Afghan partners, our military is no longer undermined by artificial timelines, and we no longer tell our enemies our plans", Trump said.

Meanwhile, the White House also focused on US' South Asia Strategy.

"President Trump's conditions-based South Asia Strategy provides commanders with the authority and resources needed to deny terrorists the safe haven they seek in Afghanistan and Pakistan", the White House, said, in a statement.

The US President also urged the Congress to ensure that in the fight against the IS and the Al Qaeda, "we continue to have all necessary power to detain terrorists -- wherever we chase them down."

Trump, earlier in his speech, announced that he has signed an executive order to keep the detention to keep the detention facility at Cuba's Guantanamo Bay open. (ANI)
