Pak SC disqualifies Sharif as PML-N chief

Islamabad [Pakistan], Feb 21 (ANI): Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from the post of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party chief, saying all the decisions made by him as head of the party stand null and void.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar ruled against the Elections Act 2017 passed by the parliament, which paved the way for Sharif to resume his position as party chief following his disqualification from public office in July last year.

The Chief Justice said that as a consequence, Senate tickets issued by Sharif were also declared void, throwing the fate of March 3 Senate elections in doubt.

Sharif said his family was being victimised in the name of justice.

The former Prime Minister asserted his family would remain steadfast in the pursuit of its mission despite the use of underhand tactics by opponents, Geo News reported.

"We have never compromised on our principles and do not intend to do so in the future. We will not hesitate to sacrifice anything for democracy and the rule of law," the former premier told party leaders in a meeting here.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan disqualified Sharif from the post of Prime Minister after the apex court found him guilty in the Panama Papers verdict.(ANI)
