American diplomat Howard Schaffer passes away
Washington [United States], November 20 (ANI): A veteran American diplomat and South Asian expert, who served as an ambassador to Bangladesh, political counselor at American embassies in India and Pakistan, Howard B. Schaffer passed away on Sunday.
Richard Rossow, who is a senior fellow and holds the chair for Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Wadhwani Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies confirmed the news on twitter.
"A giant of US-India relations has passed. Going to miss the wise counsel-and humor- of Amb Howie Schaffer," Rossow tweeted.
A retired American Foreign Service officer, Schaffer spent much of his 36-year career dealing with U.S. relations with South Asia.
He had previously served as ambassador to Bangladesh, political counselor at American embassies in India and Pakistan.
His earlier assignments included postings to New Delhi, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur.
He was author of biographies of two American diplomats who served as ambassadors to India at times when the US was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Kashmir dispute.
Schaffer is also the author of many articles on South Asian matters. (ANI)
