North India’s famous Langoor Mela commenced in Amritsar
In the fair children or persons of any age group clad in glittering red dress with silver lining and wearing a special conical cap and holding silver sticks throng at the Bada Hanuman Mandir situated in the Durgiana Temple complex from far-flung places irrespective of their religion. The ten-day long mela concludes on the next day of Dussehra when these langoors offer their special dress in the Bada Hanuman Mandir. The mandir is unique in the world where Hanumanji is shown in a sitting posture. Popular belief has it that parents make a wish for a child in the temple and vows to make him langoor when their wish comes true. Going by mythology, this is the same place where Hanuman got the royal horse released from Luv and Kush. The barefooted langoors, dancing to the beats of dhol, comes to pay obeisance at the Hanuman temple twice a day. Many of them even takes the full band along with them.
