BJP MP from Kota Om Birla was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed Om Birla's name for the post of Speaker. This was supported by the MPs of NDA allies. On the other hand, opposition MPs proposed the name of K Suresh for the post of Speaker. But Om Birla was elected president by voice vote. Om Birla was elected speaker for the second consecutive time. There was a contest for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker between BJP MP Om Birla from NDA and Kodikunnil Suresh from Congress. Birla and Suresh had also filed their nomination papers on Tuesday as candidates of NDA and opposition alliance India. Om Birla has also been a former speaker of the Lok Sabha. He is a three-time MP from Kota in Rajasthan, while K Suresh is an eight-time MP from Mavelikara seat in Kerala. The decision to contest the election for the post of Speaker was taken by the opposition at the last moment. The condition of the India alliance was that in exchange for the support of NDA candidate Om Birla, the opposition should be given the post of Deputy Speaker. Senior BJP leaders did not accept this, after which elections were announced.
