Onion at Rs 100 per kg! Tears roll as prices of staple soar in various parts of India
The price of onion is bringing tears in the eyes of its consumers in various parts of the country, with a kilo of the staple costing a whopping ₹100 in some retail markets. The vegetable scored a "century" in West Bengal's capital Kolkata, while it has been selling at ₹80 a kilo in Maharashtra's Nagpur, Gujarat's Saurashtra and UP's Varanasi over the past couple of weeks.
Traders, however, felt the price would hover around the present figure, if not at a higher range for a few more days, as the state's decision to import onions from Rajasthan and Karnataka to boost the stock would see on-ground effect only next month.
