'No Compromise With Sharia Law...,' AIMPLB Makes Major Announcement on Secular Civil Code | ABP News

The discussion on the Secular Civil Code has been reignited following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, in which he deemed the Secular Civil Code necessary and labeled religious personal laws as communal. This has sparked a strong reaction from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which has found the Prime Minister's remarks objectionable. The AIMPLB has stated that Muslims will not accept a Uniform or Secular Civil Code and will not compromise on Sharia law (Muslim Personal Law). In a press release, the AIMPLB expressed deep disapproval of PM Modi's call for a Secular Civil Code and the labeling of religious personal laws as communal. The board emphasized that Muslims will not deviate from Sharia law, which forms the basis of their personal laws. Dr. SQR Ilyas, a spokesperson for the AIMPLB, criticized the Prime Minister's announcement, describing it as a deliberate scheme with serious consequences. The board highlighted that Indian Muslims have repeatedly clarified that their family laws are based on Sharia, which they will not abandon. They also pointed out that the Indian legislature has approved the Sharia Application Act, 1937, and that the Constitution under Article 25 guarantees the fundamental right to practice, propagate, and follow religion. The press release further noted that personal laws of other communities are also based on their own religious and ancient traditions. Attempts to alter these and impose a uniform secular law are viewed as undermining religion and a mimicry of Western practices. The AIMPLB argued that such actions should not be pursued by the country's elected representatives.
