As of Thursday, 123 people had died in the Hathras "satsang" stampede. The self-styled godman Narayan Sakar Hari, also known as Bhole Baba, was leading the prayer meeting. The godman said in a statement that he was "condoling" the event and that the commotion started long after he had left the venue. "I/we express our deep condolence to the families of the deceased and pray to prabhu/parmatma (God) for the speedy recovery of the injured," stated the message. He added that A.P. Singh, a Supreme Court attorney, was permitted to pursue "further legal action in regard of stampede created by some anti-social elements after Samagam" by him.
