Assam News: Fled, Jumped, and Met His End, How Assam Gang Rape Accused Died? | ABP News
In Assam's Nagaon district, the main accused in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl, Tafazzul Islam, has died. Early this morning at 4 a.m., the police were taking him to the crime scene for a reconstruction when he attempted to escape by jumping into a pond. The accused drowned in the pond. After a two-hour-long rescue operation, his body was recovered. Nagaon SP Swapnaneel Deka stated, "The police had previously arrested him in connection with this case. When a police team took him to the crime scene last night, the main accused tried to escape by jumping into a pond near the site. Our officers conducted a search operation, and with the help of the SDRF team, we recovered his body from the pond this morning." Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in the Dhing area, stating, "I just want to say one thing: when atrocities against women occur, we must act immediately. The public should see that the government is taking strict action. When people feel the government is being lenient, they get angry. In such cases, the government must take very aggressive action. In Bengal, the government didn’t do so, which is why people are angry." The gang rape occurred when the minor girl was returning from her tuition class. Police reported that the 10th-grade student was attacked by three individuals between 7 and 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. After the gang rape, the attackers abandoned her by the roadside in the Borbheti area. About an hour later, local residents found her naked and unconscious. The locals informed the police, and the minor was rescued and taken to Dhing FRU for medical assistance. The incident has sparked large-scale protests across Assam. It's worth noting that after the investigation, Assam police arrested Islam on Friday, August 23. He was identified as the third accused in the case. The police are still searching for the other two culprits involved in the crime.
