"Camels also eat bones for calcium. Tamil sangam literature has songs about camel ate bones," wrote one user on the post.
After a video shared by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda on social media of a deer eating a snake went viral, a similar video showing a giraffe chewing on bones has emerged. Herbivores animals don't hunt or prey and primarily consume plant materials as their main diet which is why the video has created a buzz online and raked up thousands of views.
The video was shared by IFS officer Nanda, who explained, "Giraffes are herbivores & use their long necks to reach the leaves & buds in the tree top. They have evolved that way. But sometimes chew & eat bones to get phosphorus. Nature is amazing.''
According to National Geographic, Giraffes consume bones, horns, fallen antlers, and ivory as they provide them with calcium and phosphorous they need for their skeletons. They do not swallow the bones but drop them out when it has gained enough nutrients.
