In a significant blow to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), six of the party's Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) joined the Congress party on Thursday night. The shift took place in the presence of Telangana Congress Chief, Revanth Reddy, at his residence in Jubilee Hills. This move follows a series of defections from BRS after their defeat in the Telangana Assembly elections held last year.
The defectors include Dande Vithal, Bhanu Prasad Rao, MS Prabhakar, Baswaraju Saraiah, Boggarapu Dayanad, and Yegge Mallesham. AICC in-charge Deepa Das Munshi was also present during the event.
Following these defections, the BRS now has 25 members in the Telangana Legislative Council, while the Congress has increased its strength to 14 members.
These MLCs joined the Congress immediately after Revanth Reddy returned from a trip to Delhi.
KTR Welcomes Resignation Of Keshava Rao From Rajya Sabha
In a related development, BRS Working President KT Rama Rao welcomed the resignation of K. Keshava Rao from the Rajya Sabha after he joined the Congress. Rama Rao also demanded that the six BRS MLAs who switched to the ruling party should resign as well.
"BRS MP Keshava Rao has tendered his resignation after joining the Congress. We welcome his decision. What about the BRS MLAs who defected and contested the Lok Sabha polls on a Congress ticket?" Rama Rao asked, referring to D. Nagender, who unsuccessfully contested the elections from Secunderabad on a Congress ticket, according to a report on IANS.
Rama Rao questioned the commitment of the Congress party to uphold the Constitution and adhere to the Schedule 10 Amendment as stated in their manifesto. "If you can't make the BRS MLAs resign, how can the nation trust that you are committed to the Schedule 10 Amendment?" he asked.
Earlier, Keshava Rao met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in Delhi to submit his resignation.
