Threads, the much-awaited microblogging platform from Instagram, officially rolled out to users on July 6. Touted as a rival to Elon Musk’s Twitter, Threads will allow users to share mini posts, just like Twitter, but it will leverage all the elements from Instagram, including username, followers, and others. In case you were wondering how to sign up for Threads and use it, here’s a quick guide for your perusal. 

How To Install Threads?

Just like any other app, Threads is available to download via Google Play (for Android users) and App Store (for iOS). 

Is There A Web Version For Threads?

At the time of writing, Threads doesn’t have a dedicated website and is only available in its app form. 

How To Sign Up For Threads?

Threads can only be used in integration with Instagram. Put simply, you cannot use Threads without having an active Instagram account. 

Once you download Threads, a pop-up will ask you to sign in using your Instagram username. Just click on it and you’re all set.

Will My Instagram Followers Be On Threads?

Yes. When you use Threads for the first time, you will get a chance to follow all the users you already follow on Instagram. Of course, you can always follow new users on Threads.

How Does Threads Work?

If you have used Twitter, you’ll have a very clear idea of how Threads works. You can post text messages and attach photos, videos, or GIFs to your posts. 

Since the app is called Threads, you will be able to post a thread of consecutive posts, just like Twitter’s own ‘threads’.

What Is The Character Limit On Threads?

As per Instagram, you can post Threads of up to 500 characters. In comparison, Twitter allows posts of up to 280 characters. Of course, if you are a paying Twitter Blue user, the character limit goes up to 10,000.

Are There Any Limits On Number Of Threads?

Nope. You can add as many threads as you want on any post. There are no limits in place. 

Can You Sign In With Multiple Accounts On Threads?

Nope. At the time of writing, Threads only allows logging in with a single user ID at a time. 

Are There Ads On Threads?

At the time of writing, we were unable to spot any ads on Threads. But given that this is a Meta-owned platform, it could be expected that they might start appearing soon once the app gets more traction.

Should You Use Hashtags On Threads?

So far, hashtags don’t automatically get converted into keywords on Threads, as it does for Instagram or Twitter. At the time of writing, Threads appear to be a hashtag-free platform. 

Are Accounts Private On Threads?

All accounts are by default private on Threads, as per Instagram. You will only be able to see posts from the accounts you follow on your main feed. 

Can You Share Threads?

All posts on Threads can be shared on Instagram (in the form of Stories or posts). 

Interestingly, you can also share your thread directly on Twitter. 

Apart from that, you can share a link to your thread with your friends and contacts via WhatsApp, AirDrop, etc. 

Lastly, just like retweets, you will be able to repost threads either directly, or with an added quote.

Can You Restrict Users Or Keywords On Threads?

Yes, you can. Similar to the functionality available on Instagram, Threads allows users to incorporate hidden words into their threads to filter out replies that contain specific words.

Moreover, on Threads, you have the option to unfollow, block, restrict, or report a profile by accessing the three-dot menu.

It's worth noting that any profiles you've already blocked on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads as well.

What’s Next For Threads?

In the long run, Instagram plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, which is an open social networking protocol set by the World Wide Web Consortium. Once that happens, Threads should be to work with other platforms that support the protocol, including Mastodon and WordPress.

Instagram also added, "Soon we’ll be adding a number of new features to help you continue to discover threads and creators you’re interested in, including improved recommendations in feed and a more robust search function that makes it easier to follow topics and trends in real-time."
