Tata Group To Make iPhones In India For Domestic, Global Markets
With this, Tata Group will become the first homegrown iPhone maker.
India's biggest conglomerate Tata Group will manufacture Apple iPhones in the country for domestic and international markets, Minister of State (MoS) IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Friday. The MoS IT also congratulated Tata Group for taking over the operations of Wistron's unit. With this, Tata Group will become the first homegrown iPhone maker.
"PM @narendramodi Ji's visionary PLI scheme has already propelled India into becoming a trusted & major hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports. Now within just two and a half years, @TataCompanies will now start making iPhones from India for domestic and global markets from India. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations," Chandrasekhar posted on X, formerly Twitter.
"Thank you @Wistron for your contributions, and great going for Apple in building a global supply chain from India with Indian companies at its helm," he added.

In a stock exchange filing, Taiwanese firm Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Pvt. Ltd confirmed its acquisition by Tata Group for around $125 million. This acquisition was driven by strategic considerations in line with the reshaping of the company's global manufacturing strategy, the firm added, as per TechCrunch.
Notably, in a first, India-assembled vanilla iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models started retailing in the country on September 22, which was the day of launch. India-made devices have also been made available in other parts of the world, reports said. Apple has been assembling iPhone models in India along with its contract manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron (which has been taken over by homegrown Tata Group). Apple is said to have shifted 7 per cent of search iPhone assembling in India.
The new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plusmodels are being manufactured by Apple's contract manufacturer Foxconn's production unit near southern Indian Chennai.
