Google Pixel Users To Get New Feature, Screen To Change Touch Sensitivity Based on Environment: Report

The indications of the adaptive touch feature were identified in the code strings of the latest Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 release.

Google's Pixel 8 series from last year comes equipped with an exclusive screen protector detector feature. This advanced capability detects the addition or removal of a screen protector on the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro handset and prompts users to enable or disable the screen protector mode accordingly. Presently, the tech giant is reportedly preparing to introduce a new adaptive touch feature to Pixel devices. This functionality is anticipated to automatically adjust screen touch sensitivity based on users' environmental conditions and activities. References to this feature were purportedly discovered in the code strings of Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1.

According to a report by Android Police, indications of the adaptive touch feature were identified in the code strings of the latest Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 release. As per the strings, the adaptive touch feature is expected to autonomously modify the touch sensitivity of the handset based on the user's surroundings, activities, and the presence of a screen protector.

The strings do not specify the environmental factors or activities triggering a change in touch sensitivity. However, the report suggests that Pixel devices might automatically adjust screen touch sensitivity based on factors like rain or cold weather and activities such as swimming. The reference to the screen protector could be related to the existing screen protector detection feature available on Pixel 8 devices.

How To Use The Feature When It Arrives

Additionally, the report indicates that when the new feature is implemented on Pixel devices, the Adaptive Touch toggle will be located in the Settings app under Display > Touch Sensitivity. The introduction of this feature is anticipated to enhance the overall user experience.

It's worth noting that Google already provides the screen protector detector feature exclusively for the Pixel 8 series. This feature detects instances when a user adds or removes a screen protector from the handset. Upon attaching a screen protector, a notification is sent to the user, prompting them to enable the screen protector mode to enhance touch sensitivity.
