"What an incredible moment", posted Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X, formerly Twitter, and congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as India became the first country to successfully achieve a soft landing on the Southern polar region of the Moon. The Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the Moon at 6:04pm IST on August 23, 2023 (Wednesday).

"What an incredible moment! Congratulations to @isro for the successful landing of #Chandrayaan3 on the moon this morning. Today India became the first country to successfully achieve a soft landing on the southern polar region of the moon," Pichai posted.

Meanwhile, the Chandrayaan-3 live stream broke Spanish streamer Ibai’s world record of 3.4 million viewers on Alphabet-owned YouTube. The soft landing of the Chandrayaan-3 was streamed live on the official YouTube channel of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).

The ISRO established a communication link with its Moon lander that is now on the lunar soil. “The communication link is established between the Chandrayaan-3 Lander and MOX-ISTRAC, Bengaluru,” ISRO noted.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft took a significant amount of time to reach the Moon, as compared to the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 1970s. The Chandrayaan-3 comprises a propulsion module (weighing 2,148 kg), a lander (1,723.89 kg) and a rover (26 kg). Earlier, ISRO had said the Moon lander had established communication links with the Chandrayaan-2 mission’s orbiter which is circling the Moon since 2019.
