The flag pole was set up to welcome Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Chennai: A man allegedly died after he came in contact with a live wire while removing a DMK flag pole erected to welcome Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Karaikudi of Sivaganga district.

The event of the Minister took place on December 24.

After the event on Saturday, DMK members were involved in removing the flag pole erected for the event. Veeramalai of Rasipuram was also removing a flagpole when the iron rod of the pole suddenly came in contact with a live wire. He immediately got electrocuted and collapsed on the ground.

Veeramalai was rushed to a government hospital. However, he was declared dead on arrival.

Following this, Karaikudi (North) police have booked a case under section 174 (unnatural death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The police said, Veeramalai was a contractor and nearly 10 people were working under him.

The police said that they told them not to erect the flag poles on the road. However, the contractors did not listen.

They also erected several iron flag poles without considering whether there was a flag pole since they can charge Rs 50 per flagpole, he said.

Earlier, an AIADMK worker died after a party flag pole collapsed and fell on him in Chengalpattu district on December 16. The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Chellapan.

While the party workers were involved in lowering the flag pole, the pole fell on him. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead by the doctors. Later, the Madurantakam police sent the body for autopsy.

The flag pole was earlier inaugurated by former CM Edappadi K Palaniswami.
