Tamil Nadu government started the sale of tomatoes at a subsidised rate of Rs 60 per kg at ration shops in Chennai. The move of the state government came as the price of the vegetable has soared across the country. After the purchase, the customers thanked the government for the good initiative.
A customer, Baby said, "From today, tomato is being sold in ration shops at Rs 60/kg. It is available for Rs 100-130/kg in market. We are happy that Govt has started the sale at half the price. We thank our State govt for this good initiative."

The decision was announced after Chennai`s cooperative minister K R Periyakaruppan chaired a consultation at Tamil Nadu Secretariat.
The Minister, as per a report on News 18, said, "Tomatoes will be sold at 82 public distribution shops from Tuesday at Rs 60 per kg. Across the country, the prices of tomatoes have increased and we are taking steps to procure tomatoes directly from farmers and sell it at half the market price.”
He said that the price of tomatoes reaches a record high during a particular season every year. However, he said that they would take steps to prevent such events in the future.
Tomatoes are priced above Rs 100 in many parts of the state. Apart from Tomatoes, green chilies have also reached a record-high price.
Meanwhile, tomatoes are also being sold at Rs 60 per kg at 62 farm fresh outlets including 27 in Chennai across Tamil Nadu.
