Chennai: A couple from MDMK won Mangadu municipality seats in Tamil Nadu urban local body elections on Tuesday.


P Murugan who already served as a municipal leader nearly three times from Mangadu ward 1 in the past won ward 6 for the first time, reported The New Indian Express. His wife also won the municipality election. The couple contested from ward 6 since it was recently developed into a municipality. With the two gains for the family from the same ward, Murugan has a chance to be elected a chairperson of Mangadu municipality.

Murugan initially joined MDMK while Vaiko floated the party leaving DMK in 1994. Murugan said, while he was young he was lured by the speech of Vaiko and joined the party wanting to create a change.


Later, he married Sumathi 23 years ago and since then the couple together work for MDMK.


Talking about the victory, Sumathi said that she was persuaded by her husband to contest in the elections since even though she was in the party she never had the idea of contesting in the polls.

However, she said that her family was politically aware and even her sister-in-law contested as an independent candidate but lost by just seven votes.


Yet the couple is motivated to serve the people and to create additional facilities since it was upgraded into a municipality recently.


Murugan said that they want to ensure the proper functioning of stormwater drains in Mangadu and to construct a bus stand near the temple.
