Chennai: Transwoman candidate Ganga fielded by DMK in Ward 37 of Vellore registered her victory in Tamil Nadu Urban Local Body Polls 2022. The candidate received a total of 2,131 votes in the polls. 


Ganga, a 49-year-old transwoman, was announced as the candidate for Ward 37 in the district with 60 wards based on the application submitted by the candidate showing interest to contest in the polls, ABP Nadu reported. 


From then Ganga campaigned by distributing pamphlets, meeting the public door-to-door and addressing meetings in order to woo the voters.

During the campaign talking to ABP Nadu, Ganga said that she was the only transwoman candidate who was given the opportunity by CM Stalin. Hence, she said that she will register her victory and dedicate it to the Chief Minister. 


Ganga has been in the party for more than 20 years. Apart from party activities, she was also involved in other social work and was appointed as the secretary of the South India Transgender Association.

Meanwhile, AIADMK fielded a transwoman Jayadevi while BJP fielded another transwoman Rajamma in the fray. However, the results of their wards are yet to be known.


The first transwoman to get elected as civic body representative was Riya (30). She was elected as panchayat union ward member in Tiruchengode Panchayat Town in Namakkal district. She was also a DMK member.
