Chennai: The DMK witnessed a thumping victory in the polls to Chennai Corporations by bagging 153 wards of the contested 165 wards. The allies of DMK too performed well in the city corporation election helping the DMK outperform in the polls. With the majority, the DMK is now set to soon elect the city's first woman SC mayor from the party through an internal poll.



In the election, the opposition AIADMK just won 15 wards despite contesting independently in all the 200 wards of the city corporation. The BJP and AMMK also opened their accounts by winning a ward each in the city.


In Chennai civic body polls, DMK bagged 153 wards while the ruling party's major alliance partner Congress won 13 seats followed by CPM and VCK who won four seats each. The other allies including MDMK won 2 seats, CPI and IUML won one seat each, as reported by ABP Nadu.

With the grand victory, DMK will now elect a Mayor among the 15 Scheduled Caste woman Councillors who belong to the party.


On the other hand, AIADMK bagged only 15 wards despite contesting alone in all the 200 wards.

Further, BJP and AMMK which went alone in the polls and won a ward each in the civic body.

The Chennai city also voted a 21-year-old youngest councilor Priyadarshini of CPM in ward 98, as per a report on Times of India.


On Wednesday, DMK president and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin thanking the people of the state said, the victory of the party is a good conduct certificate for the past based on the performance of the party in the past nine months.


He also said that the victory is an endorsement for the Dravidian model of the government, reported ABP Nadu.


Meanwhile, after facing the defeat, AIADMK called the victory of DMK an "artificial victory". The AIADMK coordinator said the election does not reflect the sentiment of the people.


However, AIADMK lost both the wards in which AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam and AIADMK co-coordinator Edappadi Palaniswami resided in Theni and Salem respectively.
