Tirunelveli Quarry Accident: NDRF Retrieve Body Of Another Worker As Two Remain Trapped Under Boulder

On Saturday around 11.30 PM, six workers got trapped in a 300-ft-deep pit after boulders suddenly came rolling down due to a reported land slide in Tirunelveli.

Chennai: After 47 hours of the quarry accident, the rescue personnel retrieved the body of a worker from the stone quarry in Adaimidhippankulam hamlet near Munnerpallam of Tirunelveli on Tuesday. The personnel is also engaged to rescue two other workers who are still trapped in the boulders. 

On Saturday around 11.30 PM, six workers got trapped in a 300-ft-deep pit after boulders suddenly came rolling down due to a reported land slide in Tirunelveli. The rescue personnel was immediately pushed into service and three workers were rescued from the pit.

However, on Sunday, one of the rescued workers Selvam died without responding to treatment. 

On Monday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) workers attempted to resume operation but could not carry out the works due to the unstable rocky surfaces on the site, said a report on PTI.

Yet, they identified a worker who was trapped under a boulder. They tried to rescue him on Monday but the rocks continued to fall down. 

Hence, on Tuesday, the workers resumed the operation and retrieved the worker but he was found dead.

Currently, the personnel is still involved in the operation to rescue the two workers--Rajendran and Selvakumar--who are still trapped under the debris. 

Meanwhile, TN CM Stalin announced Rs 15 lakh compensation to the family of the two deceased workers in the Tirunelveli mishap. Earlier, Stalin also released Rs 1 lakh fund for providing treatment for the injured.

The quarry was functioning with a license received in 2018 and the license was supposed to be renewed in 2023.
