Tamil Nadu Local Body Polls 2021: DMK Likely To Sweep With Huge Margin, Actor Vijay's Party Makes Inroads

In interesting turn of events, a Tiruchy man became a panchayat president with just a single vote.

Chennai: The DMK and its ally are likely to sweep rural local body elections conducted for nine-newly formed districts in Tamil Nadu. As per the early trends, DMK was also leading in the bypolls conducted for 789 vacant seats across the state. 

Till Tuesday evening, DMK was leading in little over 70 per cent of seats, said a report on The Indian Express. The ruling party was reportedly leading in 1,100 seats out of 1,381 panchayat union wards. It was also leading in most panchayat wards as per trends, the report said.

In terms of the declared results on the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission website (TNSEC) for the four-tiered elections, DMK won in 38 seats while Congress won in four seats and an independent candidate also bagged the post of district councillor. Till 8 am, out of 153 district councillors posts, results have been declared for 43 seats. The AIADMK is yet to make gains in the poll held to choose district councillors. 

In the case of elections for ward councillors, DMK won 617 seats while Congress won 28 seats. AIADMK won 123 seats and BJP won 7 seats. CPI and CPM won 2 and 4 seats respectively. Among independents, 122 contestants won their respective seats. Till 8 am, results were declared for 907 of 1,421 seats.

In the debut elections, contestants of Actor Vijay's fan association Vijay Makkal Iyakkam was leading in 50 of the 150 contested seats. However, the actor denied support to the party for contesting in polls.

The elections also yet again proved the importance of a single vote. A Tiruchy man became a panchayat president with just a single vote. On the other hand, a BJP candidate became a troll material on social media after he received just a single vote in Kurudampalayam panchayat.
