Tamil Nadu Is Home To 2% Of World's Scientists, Says Study

The Stanford report identified the top 2 per cent of scientists based on various criteria. 

Chennai: Tamil Nadu is home to 2 per cent of top scientists in the world, said a study recently conducted by Stanford University. The state alone has top 100 scientists including one of them from a government college affiliated with Anna University. 

The Stanford report was published on PLOS, a non-profit and open-access publisher to empower researchers, in October. The Stanford report identified the top 2 per cent of scientists based on various criteria. 

The scientists are given a ranking based on the papers produced by them and their specializations, according to a report on The Hindu.  In Tamil Nadu, of the total, 36 scientists are from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and seven scientists are from the National Institute of Technology Tiruchy.

Nearly, eight scientists are from Bharathiar University and nine scientists are from Annamalai University. Both Bharathiar and Annamalai are state-run universities. 

Around two scientists each are from Central University of Tamil Nadu, Alagappa University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and Madurai Kamaraj University.

The University of Madras, Anna University and Periyar university have one scientist each.

Among the top scientists are N Kumarasamy (virology), who is involved in Antiviral Research and Treatment of Clinical Research site in Chennai, Jipmer's director Rakesh Aggarwal involved in gastroenterology and hepatology study, SA Abbasi involved in strategic, defense and security studies from Pondicherry University, said a report on TOI.

The list also had Kumarasamy who is the chief and director of the center at Voluntary Health Services Hospital in Chennai.
